Evaporator Coil Maintenance Tips
The evaporator coil draws moisture from the air as part of a well functioning air conditioning unit. On a humid day it may remove several gallons of water out of the air, so it is in everyone’s best interest to make sure that the water can be drawn into the evaporator coil and out again properly or there could quickly become a soggy mess. To properly maintain an evaporator coil, keep the drain free of obstacles and clean the coils of any dust or other mess which can accumulate over time.
The evaporator drain is the part which carries water from the inside unit into the appropriate floor drain. Even water drawn from the air can leave deposits in the evaporator drain, which accumulate bit by bit over time. If it is not cleaned, then the water will be backed up and leave pools of water on the floor and a big mess in your utility room. The easiest way to test the drainage for maintenance purposes is to deliberately pour water down the drain to see if it all flows the way it should. If it is not open, call a technician to help you clear it out.
The second part of regular evaporator coil maintenance is general cleaning of the coils. These are fragile so you should not clean them manually unless you are certain that they will be undamaged by your efforts. When they have not been cleaned for awhile, they are often filled with dust, spider webs, or pet hair which has drifted around your house and settled into unclean eddies such as the evaporator coils. In general, if you know that this has not been looked into or cleaned for a long time, it should be taken care of. Regular maintenance should also include looking for signs of damage, such as cracks or corrosion.
Regular maintenance of evaporator coils is simple. They do not require much, but a good cleaning is still important to keep it operating properly and prevent spills. That bit of time can prevent many problems.
